THE FALL (NETFLIX)
First released in 2013 by the BBC, The Fall is a gripping psychological thriller given a second wind by Netflix, starring the enigmatic Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan in the lead roles.
The Fall delves deep into the lives of two hunters - a serial killer who preys on victims in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and a female detective drafted from the London MET to catch him. The local authorities have no suspects and no experience with cases involving sexually motivated serial killers; DSI Stella Gibson has. She heads a task force dedicated to solving the crime spree, with a simple motto: anyone not part of the solution is part of the problem. The killer, Paul Spector is a father and a husband leading a double life. He's hiding in plain sight, the protagonist in a cat and mouse game that is every police officer's worst nightmare.
THE TALK (CHANNEL 4)
Following the tragic death of US citizen George Floyd, supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement took to the streets, protesting globally for an end to police brutality and all racially motivated violence against Black people. In Channel 4's one-off docu-film The Talk, Rugby Player Maro Itoje, Presenter Ade Adepitan, Musicians Tinie Tempah and Emeli Sandé, and other well-known black Britons share their poignant and emotional experiences of the conversations parents have to help their children face racism.
The tone is set from the very start, as writer/presenter Gary Younge highlights the effect of racism with a bold, hard-hitting statement: “The consequences can be death.”
Split into sections from “lost innocence” – discussing first experiences with racism – to “it’s different for girls” and "micro-aggressions", the 50-minute long film explores the various levels of mistreatment and opens one's eyes to the hardships of growing up Black in Britain. This honest and powerful film should be seen by everyone.
